Cup win sees 1st team off to good start

Buxton 1s sealed their first victory of the season on Sunday as they hosted Anston at the Park in the 1st round of the ECB National Cup.

The away side won the toss and opted to bowl first on a very green, ‘April’ wicket. It was a timid but steady start from opening batters Goli and Sanchez, as they fought against Anston’s consistent opening bowlers.

After the loss of a few wickets in quick succession Buxton were standing at 27-4, with overs passing by. However partnerships formed as the middle order of Sollis, Whitehouse and Poole all made healthy contributions. This was supported by a stand out performance from A Slater (73), who displayed a dominant show of power hitting towards the latter half of the innings, seeing Buxton close with a respectable score of 169-9 off their 40 overs.

Anston’s batting innings started solidly and ahead of the run rate; contributions from their top order placed the away side in a steady position of 74-3 within the first 15 overs.

This brought Buxton’s new overseas, C Griffin (3-46), into the bowling attack along with N Allen (3-31), who both displayed fine examples of spin bowling throughout the middle overs, forcing Anston on the back foot. Strong spells of economical bowling from A Slater and Goli in the final overs left the away side just short of their target, as they finished on 163-8 and Buxton were victorious.
