Buxton 1s were defeated this weekend as they hosted table toppers Mickleover at The Park, in Division 2 of the Derbyshire County League. Buxton won the toss and opted to bat first on a steady looking wicket. Openers Goli and Marsden (33) formed a solid foundation for the innings as they fought against consistent spells from Mickleover’s opening bowlers. The home side stood at 77-0 at the halfway stage.
The loss of a wicket brought C Griffin to the crease who made a solid contribution before departing on 25. Goli began to push on in the middle overs and add runs to Buxton’s total, until he was also dismissed in the 33rd over with a top score of 72. Buxton’s middle order continued to provide vital runs in the later overs with captain Whitehouse scoring 39, H Griffin scoring 35 not out and A Slater also left on 19 not out. Buxton finished on 241-4 in their 45 overs.
Mickleover’s opening batters set the tone from the off as they began to collect boundaries with ease. R Goli had a brief breakthrough as he dismissed one of the openers in the 5th over. However the away side continued to put away the bad deliveries as they raced to 95 within the first 15 overs, with the chase very much in their sights. Buxton made changes and brought their spin bowling attack into the game in the middle overs, with the hope of creating a much needed breakthrough. However this was to no avail as Mickleover’s top order continued to dominate and chase down the required run rate.
Eventually the away side were victorious as they reached their target in the 36th over, finishing on 242-2. Mickleover’s opening bat, K Preston, was an easy picking for man of the match, as he showed a dominant display of power hitting throughout the innings, finishing on 169 not out with a total of 30 boundaries.
Elsewhere Buxton 2nds maintained their good start to the season and second place in the league with a 14 run win over Apperknowle 1st team. Buxton 232 for 5 off 45 overs (M.Poole 78 and Z. Islam 65). Apperknowle 218 for 9 off 45 overs (F. Heathcote 3 for 37).
The 3rd team drew their game against South Wingfield 4ths. Wingfield 186 all out off 39.2 overs (M. Webb 4 for 43 and D. Blackwell 3 for 7). Buxton 184 for 8 off 40 overs (D. Blackwell 30 and T. Woodall 26).
